Montessori is an internationally known system of education based on the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori. She was the first female physician in Italy, and through her work with economically and academically disadvantaged children she developed a new system of education which was based on respect for the child. In 1907, she began her school, Casa dei Bambini, in Rome, Italy. Within one year her students achieved higher academic levels than children in the Italian school system. Since then Montessori education has grown and is used in innumerable private and public schools throughout the world.
Maitland Montessori School has been a teacher education center for over 15 years and is an American Montessori Society (AMS) full affiliate. We have educated students from the USA, Canada, South America, Asia, and Europe in the use of the Montessori method. AMS is a non-profit education society which was founded in 1960 and whose purpose is to help children develop their potential through the educational standards of Dr. Maria Montessori. AMS is dedicated to advancing Montessori philosophies and best practices as universal principles of human development.
